Residential Security Tips From Overton Security

Protecting your residence from theft and vandalism while living in a residential community is very important to us. Although most communities provide a relatively secure environment, there are criminals that will take advantage of any security lapse on your part. Let us assist you in taking charge of your security with a few very effective security tips.

Security and safety are important issues facing tenants, and as criminals will always pick the most vulnerable targets, it is important to make it clear that you take security very seriously.

Do not fumble around looking for keys when you walk out of your vehicle or back to your apartment; have your keys ready to insert into the lock.
Report all lights that are not working to your management or security provider, both inside the building and in the parking lot.
If you see someone on the property who looks suspicious or makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t take a chance; lock yourself in your vehicle and call your security provider or management. Trust your instincts.
If you see something on the property that does not belong, such as a lunch bag, briefcase, paper bag, carrying case, or liter of liquid just sitting unattended, leave it alone, report it to management or security.
Report any suspicious persons or vehicles on the property that doesn’t seem to have a purpose. Be aware of thieves who appear as “pseudo-servicemen.” Check them out!
Avoid jogging or walking near bushes or trees, and stay in areas that you are familiar with and well lighted. Try to walk or jog with a friend and let somebody know when you expect to return. Don’t let your mind wander, stay alert.
Avoid jogging or walking alone early in the morning or late at night when the streets are quite and deserted.
Know the neighborhood where you live and work. Check out the locations of PD, fire stations, hospitals, restaurants and stores that stay open late.
Join or organize an apartment watch. Get to know your neighbors by introducing yourself and recognize who belongs in the complex. Invite crime prevention specialist from the local PD or Overton Security to meet with your group.
Alarm your apartment, even if it is an inexpensive alarm. Use an etching pen to mark ID numbers such as your driver’s license number on all your valuables.
Don’t stuff your purse with cash, keys, credit cards, checkbook then leave it in plain view in your apartment or next to you in your vehicle. Don’t carry your SS card with you.
Avoid using the laundry room or common area by yourself, go with someone or make sure it is being used by someone else.
If you enter your apartment and discover that you have been robbed, leave immediately, go to your car lock yourself in, start your car, and call 911.
Do not trust the trunk of your vehicle or your locker as a safe haven for valuable items. Either can be broken into as easily as doors.
Know the make and model of your vehicle and most important write down you license plate number.
Don’t open your door to a visitor relying on the chain lock for protection without verifying who the visitor is.
